Japan

1970s

Hand carved from a single block of Japanese Cedar Sugi this sculptural frog celebrates the natural beauty of the timber as much as the form itself. The maker has thoughtfully carved around the growth rings, allowing the grain to flow across the body and create striking concentric patterns through the eyes, limbs and back.

This piece, showcases the warmth, texture and imperfections that make hand-carved wooden objects so appealing. Viewed from every angle the grain becomes part of the sculpture.

Sourced from Tokyo's renowned Oedo Antique market, this is a charming example of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
